Highlight

Miriam Makeba, most famous for her version of Pata Pata, recorded a groovy version of "The Lion Sleeps," instead titled, "The Lion Cries."  She is a South African singer who was also a civil rights activist who spoke out against apartheid. She performed from 1953 until her death in 2008.

A few facts about Queen Africa:

1. She did a version of the traditional Xhosa song, "Qongqothwane," better known as "The Click Song," because of westerners' inability to pronounce it.

2. She married Stokely Carmicheal, later known Kwame Toure, founder of Students Non-violent Coordinating Committee and "Honorary Prime Minister," of the Black Panther Party.

3. She attained fame outside of South Africa after performing in Europe with Harry Belafonte.
